Clem's Suggested Daily Supplements
I take a fistful of nutritional supplements everyday. I also travel with them - putting each day's allotment into plastic bags and stuffing them in my briefcase. There are many other nutritional supplements that I take or try for awhile, but I consider these to be core supplements needed everyday. I don't recommend putting supplements or prescriptions in checked baggage if you can avoid it, just in case your bags are lossed by the airlines.
Magnesium
Magnesium, this may be the most important nutritional supplement you take. This powerhouse mineral is as essential as they come. Without it, you can't produce adenosine tri-phosphate, the substance that every cell in your body ultimately uses for energy. Due to its critical role in cellular energy production, magnesium has a huge impact on healthy heart function. Deficiencies of magnesium have been implicated in hypertension, atherosclerosis, cardiac arrhythmia and acute myocardial infarction (heart attack). Low intakes of this all-important mineral have also been linked to diabetes, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, cramping and exaggerated harmful
responses to stress. Clearly, magnesium is one nutrient you do not want to skimp on! But that's exactly what most people do. The average daily intake
among Caucasian men is only 352mg, and a mere 278mg among African-American men. Caucasian women consume an average of 256mg per day, while African-American women take in only 202mg daily. Researchers suggest 420mg for men and 320mg for women as minimal daily requirements.
Omega-3
Omega-3 fatty acids are instrumental in regulating, blood thickness/vessels, blood pressure, inflammation (throughout the body), and the joints. Also, benefits have been indicated for hormone production, immune activity and central nervous system activity. May be helpful in treating pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis, depression and more. Omega-3s are considered essential fatty acids. We need them for our bodies to work normally. Because they are not made in the body, we need to get them from our diet.
Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 is essential for calcium absorption and for maintaining adequate calcium and phosphate levels in the blood, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, this allows normal bone mineralization and bone growth. Along with calcium, vitamin D protects against loss of bone density (osteoporosis), a condition common in older adults that results in thin and brittle bones. Vitamin D is important for neuromuscular function. May assist in cancer prevention as Vitamin D inhibits proliferation (rapid division) of cells and stimulates the differentiation of cells. Uncontrolled proliferation of cells may lead to cancer. There are benefits to the immune system and cardiovascular benefits as research at the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center indicates that insufficient levels of vitamin D may significantly increase the risk of stroke, heart disease, heart failure and death, even among people with no history of heart disease. Have your doctor check your levels and if you are deficient he/she may suggest 5,000 IU daily.
CoEnzyme Q-10
Co-Q10 functions in the transfer of energy and oxygen between blood and body cells and also between cell components; in other words it is essential for the body's cells, tissues and organs. Current research indicates that it may play an important role in retention of various cardiovascular diseases. Has been shown to support healthy blood pressure. In some cases, Co-Q10 may affect the dose and activity of the other medications you are taking, such as blood thinners, so consult with your doctor.
Vitamin C
Called the king of the anti-oxidants and the most powerful on in the body, vitamin C has over forty-six different beneficial effects alone. Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin which cannot be stored in the organs or fatty tissues as fat soluble vitamins such as A, D and E can. The body needs to be recharged with vitamin C in six hour intervals because it is quickly used up and eliminated from the body. Vitamin C may, support healthy immune function, important for gum health, supports healthy cardiovascular function, shown to strength blood vessels, support healthy brain function, increase iron absorption, may promote healthy healing of wounds and burns and, essential for proper adrenal gland function.
Multi-vitamin
A multi-vitamin is essential because a multi (fills in the blanks) of your diet, so you're not running dangerously low on the essential nutrients your body needs for optimal functioning. With our soil being depleted, the air so polluted and lifestyles with limited sunlight we need to take in greater amounts of nutrients today than those who lived prior to industrialization. I recommend avoiding the one-a-days as many tend to be feeble and taking a food-based multi-vitamin.
